Can You Crack It? The Overlooked Dutch Creation Which Shaped our Modern World
There are numerous candidates for the designation as “world’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The steam engine.
As per a recent publication, however, that honor should go to the automated timber mill conceived through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Before automated cutting, building a simple merchant vessel required approximately 10 sawyers working for three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered lumber mills, an identical quantity of cut lumber could be produced within a week.”
Owing to this speedy automated cutter, which turned logs to planks with virtually no human effort, Dutch builders were able to construct vessels faster compared to any other nation, an advantage that unleashed a century of Dutch naval, economic and artistic dominance across Europe and the world.
The First Genuine Manufacturing Machine
Corneliszoon’s sawmill, contends the writer, was “humanity’s initial authentic factory apparatus.” A windmill rotated a wheel. One component converted its circular motion into vertical motion to power the saw. A separate mechanism changed the spinning motion into a lateral motion advancing the timber toward the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the wood forward a measured step per stroke.
“Every component was modest by itself. Corneliszoon’s genius was to combine these parts so the machine operated within a perfectly controlled sequence, sawing on every downward motion while advancing on every return motion. It was an astonishingly clever use of basic parts.”
