Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of access tunnels down to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
