The Kansas City Chiefs released a comment Wednesday night indicating they have knowledge of claims of abuse circulated in social media posts by a former girlfriend of player Rashee Rice and had been in contact with the league office.
The organization omitted the name of the player specifically in their announcement and said they would have “nothing more to add at this time”.
Claims Shared on Social Media
The woman, who also did not mention the athlete by name, shared a set of images on social media that seemed to depict signs of physical abuse. She did say the person involved was the father of her children, and it is known she has two children with the football player, whom the Chiefs drafted in the second round.
Police Reports Reportedly Not on File
No police reports were available in Overland Park, Kansas where the incident is said to have occurred.
Rice's Prior Off-Field Troubles
The receiver missed the initial part of this NFL campaign following an league-mandated ban for his involvement in instigating a multi-vehicle accident on a Texas roadway that left multiple people hurt. Rice was sentenced 30 days in jail and five years’ probation after entering a guilty plea to felony charges.
On the field, he concluded the season with 53 receptions for 571 yards and five TDs as the Kansas City went 6-11 and missed the playoffs for the first time in a ten-year span.
