The Fifth Toy Story Film Trailer Pits Woody and Buzz Against a Tablet Computer
It has been 30 years after the original Toy Story movie debuted, launching the animation giant as a leading animation studio and introducing audiences to iconic characters like Woody (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a glimpse into the plot but keeping fans curious how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Gang
In the teaser reveals the young girl — who received the toy collection when he left for college — getting a latest toy, one that alarms the familiar toy group. She gets her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.
Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the characters seem to view it as a danger coming to replace them, which it probably is.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4
One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is why Woody is back with his companions in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), traveling with a carnival and assisting prize toys find good homes.
Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, though. It also raises questions whether his partner will have returned with him. And where is Duke Caboom (the star)?
Continuity from the Last Installment
At the very least, some elements are continuing from the earlier movie. The last thing Woody did before departing for his fresh path was pass his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), entrusting her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip shows the badge attached to her outfit.
Hopefully she is still the driving force among the toys.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
